Liberia doesn't declare its independence and instead stays with the United States and was able to haggle out a deal to make it an autonomous territory for the time being in the mid 1800's but it would become and be called a Commonwealth. Today Liberia is a prosperous part of the United States and has been famously called "An island of prosperity in an sea of turbulence".
