Unbeknownst to the general public, the incident was caused by a Ferengi shuttle called Quark's Treasure being accidentally sent back in time from 2372 as a result of a time warp. Three of its occupants, Quark, Rom and Nog, were taken into custody and transported to the Roswell Army Air Field, where they were examined, while their ship was stored in Hangar 18 of the facility. Constable Odo, who had stowed way aboard Quark's Treasure, disguised himself as a German Shepherd dog and infiltrated the base with the intention of rescuing the three Ferengi and returning to their own time.
