This event is mainly prized for the Starblades that can be obtained. Mining these meteorites take time, and depending on your mining level, you can receive lots of different ores, gems, and essence. After a random amount of time, the meteor will explode. Mining all the way through the meteor to the starblade in the center before this happens is uncommon, and is easier if your mining level is higher.
