The men's program was established for the 1977-78 season. They were a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics until 1984. The team was a member of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association from its formation in 1980 until the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey conference was formed for the 2013-14 season. The team won the regular season championship of the NCHA in 2012-13 with a 10-2-0 record. The team won the inaugural WIAC conference tournament in 2014
