Rekaby was a peace-loving, aging male squirrel, and the leader of the Fortunate Freepaws. He had completely silver fur, which made him rather noticable from a distance; he also loved to learn long, complicated words, using them at every opportunity. After Razzid slaughtered several Guosim shrews, Rekaby and the whole band of Freepaws returned, and helped to heal the wounded left from the battle. Later, at Rekaby's suggestion, the Freepaws and the Guosim they had healed accompanied Jum Gurdy to Redwall Abbey, where they arrived just in time to witness the defeat of Razzid and his crew.
