After the events of Pokémon Yellow, a trainer (the player) follows in the champions footsteps and sets past Starmie Town, named after its many fishing locations. After passing Viridian City, the trainer heads to Viridian Forest, and catches some Pokémon. He defeats the first Gym Leader, Brock. He wins again with his rival 2 times, Misty, Lt. Surge, and Erika, until he sees the champion, the winner from Yellow. Although the new trainer is weak, he makes a easy battle. After winning with the champion, Koga (Fire) or Janine (Water) and Sabrina, Team Rocket begins infiltrating the city of New Harold. The rival defeats Team Rocket with the help of the young trainer.
