The London and North Eastern Railway (generally abbreviated to LNER) was the second largest of the Big Four railway companies created in the UK by the Railways Act of 1921. After naitonalisation it became the North-Eastern region of British Rail. The constituent companies were: * Great Eastern Railway * Great Central Railway * Great Northern Railway * Great North of Scotland Railway * Hull and Barnsley Railway * North British Railway * North Eastern Railway LNER's most famous Chief Mechanical Engineer was Sir Nigel Gresley.
