The Citadel is located at the eastern point of Plymouth Hoe, looking out onto Plymouth Sound. Originally built in the late 1660's under the order of King Charles II of England, when it was decided that it was necessary to realise Plymouth's importance as a channel port. The citadel encompasses much of Sir Frances Drake's Fort that was situated in the area where the citadel was built.
