Cox's Orange Pippin is an orange and red apple. While full of flavor, this apple is small and its yields are low. In addition, this apple has the tendency to become sunburnt and can even crack. It is said to be the only apple in which, when shaken, the pips make a rattling sound as they are only loosely held in the apple flesh, whereas other apples have their pips contained as part of the apple flesh. According to the Institute of Food Research, Cox's Orange Pippin accounts for over 50% of the UK area of dessert apples.
