Josh Stump was the distant ancestor of Jabez Stump, Jubilation Stump, Friar Higgle Stump, Furlo Stump, and 10 anonymous female hedgehogs. He and his family lived in the south of Mossflower Woods, on top of a cliff, but moved into the woods after an earthquake that made the cliffs "dance." After the incident, no one of the family of Stump has lived so far in the south as Josh and his family.
