Paolo of Genoa was a 13th century merchant. During his travels in central Asia, Paolo had adventures among Turkish tribes. One tribesman told him about a cup guarded by a Christian Knight and lethal devices in an obscure location. Paolo thought that this related to the Holy Grail. He kept a journal describing his travels, including this reference. After his death, the journal was found in a tin box hidden in St. Sophia by 20th century Italy scholar Codirolli.
