The Balkans, being close to the imperial heartland, was of far more concern to the government than other frontier areas. After the peace treaties recognising Italian independence, therefore, Romania redoubled its efforts in the Danube region, causing the conflict to drag on for decades more. However, it was never able to regain complete control of the countryside, and insurgencies and guerrilla campaigns eventually forced it to grant much of the Balkans independence as well.
