In 1864, Brownsville was a firmly pro-Confederate town. Several regiments under the command of General Nathan Bedford Forrest rendezvoused in Brownsville just prior to their attack on the Union garrison at Fort Pillow. They also picked up a guide in the town, W.J. Shaw.
