The long-range impact probe was a type of Federation probe in service in the mid-24th century. This probe was fueled by 0.2 kilogram Blitmanite or Hutzelite 27 charges. This probe would be fired into a celestial body, which would eject underground soil from the impact site. An orbiting ship would then analyzed this soil for its composition. (TNG: "Night Terrors" ) Information on this probe is from the description of blitmanite, and the function of this probe is derived from real world examples.
