In the first season episode, "1966", Nick Knight tracks references to a copy of the Abarat having been discovered during an archaeological dig in Afghanistan in the early twentieth century. It is supposed to be somewhere in State Archive No. 7 in East Berlin. Nick secretly crosses the border only to discover the archive in disarray with most of its contents undocumented. Even as he searches it for the Abarat, LaCroix comes to East Germany to stop him from finding it. Since Nick interrupts his search to help the librarian's family escape to the West, LaCroix is able to locate and destroy the book before Nick can stop him.
