Janet Stockwell was an applicant for the position of barmaid and waitress at the Carousel Club when it opened for business in May 1971. Gum-chewing, scowling and morose, she made no effort whatsoever to impress her interviewer, Candy Brown, and was only a few pounds short of not being able to fit into the skimpy costumes which the staff were expected to wear. Stan Ogden was on site to carry out some last minute alterations prior to opening night on behalf of Len Fairclough and Ray Langton and Janet met his low standards of acceptability but after she had gone Candy put the final nail in her coffin by telling Stan that she was "thick" and unsuitable for the job.
