According to the Washington Post al-Darbi was captured as a result of extended interrogation techniques used in secret interrogation centres. Al-Darbi was captured in August 2002. The Washington Post reported that CIA director George Tenet stated that al-Darbi had described a plot by Yemenis to bomb a Western oil tanker.
