The LD-8 exterminator droid was a type of hovering pesticide droid that was used to spray fields to rid them of infestations of Jevesects, a type of crop-destroying insectoid. The LD-8 wasn't a very advanced design, but it was the cheapest pesticide droid available, so was the model in most widespread use.
