In July 2005, Petrov married Chinese figure skater, Chen Lu. They currently live in Shenzhen, China, where Chen manages the World Ice Arena and Petrov is the head coach of its skating academy. On June 27, 2006, they welcomed a son, Nikita. Both Lu and Denis are naturalized citizens of the United States due to their extensive professional engagements in America.
