Wherries are a native Avian inhabitant of Pern. They were named by the Exploration and Evaluation Corps team, for they look like airborne barges - squat, fat and full, similar to the vessels that were used to ferry stuff between the English isle and the European continent on old Earth. Wherries are very aggressive carnivores, and like most other Pern animal life, have six limbs - two wings and four legs. They have downy tufts of proto-feathers covering membraneous wings, they turn aggressive if one of their kind is hurt. Males are called bucks and females are called hens.
