Velma Dinkley found the book as she, Scooby-Doo and Shaggy Rogers searched Mrs. Cutler's seemingly empty lighthouse, going there to ask her about the claims of her dead husband having returned as a ghost. As Velma and Shaggy looked into the book, the latter got a shock after Mrs. Cutler crept up from behind and placed her hand on his shoulder. After Velma assumed who she was, Mrs. Cutler explained that she used witchcraft to bring back from his watery grave, but didn't realise he would be a menace. In reality, this was a hoax in the Cutlers' scam of stealing expensive yachts.
