Together with his brother Jesse and his father Benjamin senior he went into partnership, forming B. Jacob & Sons Ltd: the firm continued operating Thames barges until 1968. When the Metropolitan Borough of Deptford was formed in 1900, Jacob was chosen as the first Mayor of Deptford, serving two consecutive terms until 1902. His brother also served as mayor in 1906-1907.
