Crescent moon tattoo allowed the monk to take the form and substance of shadows. This did not allow him to pass through objects such as doors, but objects would pass through him. The tattoo could only be activated in a place where there were possibilities for shadows (i.e. a dimly lit room etc), and when walking in a room the monk must say close to walls like a true shadow. The use of this tattoo was very painful.
