Shugg started out in junior hockey with the Oshawa Generals in 2007-08. The Windsor Spitfires accquired him in mid-season. The Spitfires won the Memorial Cup in the next two seasons (2009 & 2010. In 2010 Shugg was traded to the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors and made another trip to the Memorial Cup tournament. This time, however, he was not on the cup-winning team. The Hurricanes chose him 105th overall in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. Shugg signed with them in 2011 and was assigned to the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League. He was soon re-assigned to the Everblades.
