The first French Republican War had given republican France a great victory over its monarchist enemies and moved its border to the Rhine and the Ebro. However, the defeated kings, most of all Humphrey V, thirsted for revenge. A new War between republican France and the British-Spanish-German-Polish-Hungarian-Danish-Swedish coalition was only a question of time, and indeed broke out again in 1779. 1783, "The thrust through Germany" was delivered. General Boulanger crossed the Rhine, marched through South Hesse, Württemberg, Franconia, Thuringia until arriving in Dresden at christmas.
