He served as executive officer of the light cruiser HMS Agni in 1905 PD. (HH4) He was married and had three children. In 1919 PD, he had been promoted to Captain and served as Commander of the LAC division aboard the LAC carrier HMS Werewolf. When his wife died in a boating accident, Thurmond was relieved of his command and detached for compassionate leave. (HH10)
