Jerry Calafano was a young math teacher at Grantville High School. He was a close friend of science teacher Greg Ferrara; both enjoyed chess. Shortly after the Ring of Fire, Ferrara indicated that Calafano would be one of three teachers who would be willing to volunteer for the nascient Grantville Army.
