George Benton was one of the contestants in a “Mastermind”-style contest entitled Superbrain organised in the Rovers by Annie Walker. At Hilda Ogden’s prompting, most of the lights were switched off to create a pool of light in which Annie and the contestants sat, mimicking the style of the television programme. George Benton was the first contestant and his specialised subject was Pigeons in which he scored nine points. The overall winner, with seventeen points from answering questions on Manchester United (and wearing a hat and scarf of the team’s colours) was Stan Ogden.
