William Edwin Melton (born July 7, 1945 in Gulfport, Mississippi nicknamed "Beltin' Melton", is a former third baseman in Major League Baseball who played primarily for the Chicago White Sox. His 10-year career spanned 1968 to 1977, the last two years playing for the California Angels and Cleveland Indians respectively. In 1971, he led the American League with 33 home runs. Melton's production declined in 1972 after missing most of the season with a herniated disc resulting from a slip and fall off the field. Until the mid 1980s, Melton was the White Sox all-time home run leader (since passed up by Frank Thomas, Carlton Fisk, and others). He is now a commentator for Comcast SportsNet White Sox broadcasts.
