"Climbing Nine Stairs" is a song performed by Grover and Ernie. Ernie wants to read a book outside, so Grover gets it for him, singing how he goes up nine stairs to get to his apartment, and then down again. He gets Ernie a book, a table and a chair, but then Ernie decides to play drums outside. So Grover must carry the drums downstairs, and he falls down the stairs. A thunderstorm then starts, so Grover has to bring everything upstairs again - while Ernie carries the book.
