His name comes from co-founder of the Shinsengumi Yamanami Keisuke and his voice actor, the late Osamu Kobayashi. His design is based on producer Yoshinobu Nishizaki and actor Richard Burton. Perhaps because this design ended up looking quite similar to Ryu Hijikata, his appearance was changed for the 2199 remake.
