Samuel Hewitt and his family were the first tenants of 3 Coronation Street in 1902. By the time Samuel and wife Dolly moved to Coronation Street, they already had four children - George, Thomas, Flo and Betsy. The Hewitt clan was among the worst hit by the Weatherfield TB epidemic, with it claiming the lives of Dolly during childbirth in 1905, and George and Betsy in 1906. After Dolly's death, Samuel was comforted by her sister Gertie, who he ended up marrying. Samuel himself fought TB from 1906 and was bed-ridden for six months until the illness took his life in January 1909. Two more of children were born after his death - twins Molly and Dolly.
