The development of national identity in a society is another important step for forming a modern civilization. When a person is proud to be a member of certain state, he works gladly for promoting that state's interests, even when they are against his own. And, (which is much more important), he is ready to accept things like higher taxes, and dying in wars started by greedy politicians. And so, the nation gains new, modern military capabilities.
