Race in hip hop has existed since the genre was formed, but was not much of a controversy amongst listeners and performers of hip hop. While most hip hop performers are black (African American, Afro-Carribean, African, etc.), there is a large amount of white rappers and Hispanic and Latino rappers. The smallest minority of hip hop performers are Asian, while several Asian MCs have made great impressions on the hip hop industry. A big stereotype is that only blacks can rap, therefore excluding other races. However, this has been countered by other races as well as black rappers such as Kanye West who has said, "I like white rappers because they're rappers all the same, but the white music I like is white.".
