The Ion Pulse-class Space Station was a mobile Space Station similar in capabilities to the Death Star designed for the purpose of carrying the Ion Pulse super cannon, a Superweapon with capability of not only destroying planetary shields but using their destruction although not always and/or the planet's gravity to reflect a wave of Ion Energy from the planet in the form of a 360 degrees Pulse with impressive range, the Ion Pulse would disable any technology around the planet except Imperial technology which due to the Rebellion having made use of Ion technology in their weapons promoted them to find countermeasures to its effects.
