Animal assisted therapy (previously known as Pet therapy) involves exposure to animals which may provide relief of symptoms of depression, anxiety, and isolation. Another category, Psychiatric Service Animals are like working seeing eye dogs for often invisible psychiatric disabilities. A service animal may be able to sense the emotional state of the individual, enable communication, do tasks and can also provide socialization opportunities when the animal is not on duty. In many jurisdictions, service animals are allowed access in public and private locations by Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) law where pets may be restricted.
