He was described as looking very martial with a host of scars marking his face amongst them that of an old sword slash which ran diagonally down his right cheek to the corner of his thin-lipped mouth. The slash had also visibly dented Avalt's cheekbone. He wore a chain surcoat, scaled vambraces and greaves and was armed with a brace of throwing knives, plain-handled and polished by long use as well as a short sword scabbarded under his right arm and a sheathed cutlass under his left.
