The role of Tarot Cards is actually quite important in Visions of Escaflowne. Hitomi uses these cards to help see into people's futures, which occasionally help her and her friends get out of jams. Another role these cards serve is to help symbolize a certain key event of the episode it appears in (i.e. The Tower symbolizes separation, and Hitomi was separated from her world in episode one, which the Tower foreshadows). They each have what appear to be Italian names for each card.
