Jorell was an apprentice of Master Mastal along with Trivas. Together with Trivas, he overthrew Mastal and worked to expand the Nulvarl Empire. For several years, the two dominated politics in that region of space until an alliance of opposing planets declared war on them. During the war, Trivas and Jorell disagreed many times over how it should be prosecuted. Eventually, Jorell got tired of arguing and staged a coup to remove Trivas.
