From a video gamers standpoint, Trapani died, because besides calling hits and the like, if you had played as him in Godfather II, you wouldn't be doing much besides sitting behind a desk all game. They killed him off in order for the player to be a Soldati, just like Trapani was in the first game. The game is about working your way up from the bottom, making your bones.
