Jinenji's mother (地念児の母) met a horse yōkai when she was young, and fell in love with him. Their son Jinenji is a giant hanyō that the villagers all hate, which has made her bitter towards other humans. It is because of this resentment and due to her ties with the demon that the villagers view her as a witch by proxy.
