France is now a republic, nominally Catholic in religion. Historically France was a kingdom of Europe. The kingdom of Navarre was combined twice with the French crown until its absorption by France. The kingdom of England fell to France thrice, the first two times in conjunction with Navarre, but England ultimately left thrice.
