Laika, a dog sent by the Soviet Union, was the first animal sent to space to be monitored and to test life support systems. Laika was a Soviet space dog who became the first living animal to orbit the Earth on November 3, 1957. Laika died some five to seven hours after the launch from overheating and stress, thus also becoming the first living animal to die in space.
