Approved in 1963 as Area A of the Gallowgate project that would also see maisonette blocks and the other tower erected, construction was carried out by Thaw & Campbell. The construction of the two Gallowgate blocks were one of the most complicated and costly of all the tower blocks built by Glasgow City Council. Because of the sheer height of the buildings, it was decided that hydraulic jacks would be implemented into the foundations to allow for movement and allow the building to be flexible. Construction ended in 1968.
