ADAV was the third party to form in the wake of the factionalisation of the BdV, coalessing around veteran socialist Kurt Retzlaff. Its support is very limited, coming mainly from former citizens of old communist countries who feel Ostalgie (nostalgia for life under the socialist system in former communist countries of Eastern Europe), as seen by the party's use of the old East German coat of arms albeit slightly modified.
