While many Dwarves lived within the safety of great mountain halls, there were some that preferred the wandering life - those who would gladly sleep under an open sky rather than a rocky ceiling. These warriors were known as Rangers, and they would patrol the lands around every Dwarf Hold, ensuring the safety of their kin from the Dark Lord's servants and wandering monsters. While less-heavily armored than they warrior brothers (but only just), they carried a formidable array of weapons into battle, which often included a healthy selection of very sharp throwing axes.
