Abramowitz studied at Juilliard, graduating with multiple degrees, including a doctorate of musical arts. He played cello in formal recitals, Young Concert Artists performances and master classes but was also a very busy session musician for commercials and albums. He recorded with pop singers Carly Simon, Bette Midler and Chaka Khan and worked with Philip Glass on Glassworks and Glasspieces. He played cello on the original Broadway cast recording of Les Misérables.
