The planning for Total Knockout Wrestling began after the demise of Montiero's previous attempt at running an independent level promotion, XCW: Revenge. Developed as the professional wrestling equivalent of the popular Mixed Martial Arts movement, the promotion promised a more realistic approach in an industry at the time dominated by tribute shows and cartoonish events.
