Vancouver Island is an island located to the west of Vancouver, British Columbia The capital city of British Columbia, Victoria, is located on the island. Vancouver, the biggest city in the province, is on the mainland, even though it is also called Vancouver. The island is named after a British explorer, Captain George Vancouver.
