Jiro was brother to Onji. They had a Hii-baba, great-grandmother, who told them that once her brother Takeo was threatened by a tsuru, a crane spirit. Eventually the boy was not harmed, but the proud and boastful tsuru killed Konatsu, a friend of her great-grandmother who had appeared to help the children.
